Historical Image III

Something special for today . . . Glass Plate Negatives from deep in the Rayko Vault of Photo Love. Because these are shy, I can only tease them one by one, then if you treat them right, they might give themselves to you. These are the Fiona Apple of photography, not the Miley Cyrus of photography which I guess would be iPhone images. Screen shot 2013-11-26 at 4.24.42 PM

Click on the Image to see it lager.  Totally.

Speaking of Fiona Apple, wetplate images on glass, and children photos, anyone else think Fiona Apple and Sally Mann look like they could be related?

Keep it Cray!

San Francisco & Los Angeles Historical Project

Rayko Photo Center has a great negative archive of historical photographs which they eventually want to sell reproduction prints of.  Unfortunately, the negatives have just sat and collected dust throughout the years.  Guess who is gonna just get it done? Here is the 0001

My SPE Teaching Experience

A few weekends ago, I had the honor of being invited to teach a photographic workshop at the SPE West at Humboldt State University.  I had a lot of fun teaching digital negative to silver gelatin to a group of enthusiastic fellow teachers and a few art students.  It was a lot to cover in a short amount of time, but I was reminded of why I like teaching, that genuine excitement of learning about photography that can be sparked in both young and old eyes.  It was well worth the 600+ miles of driving done in a 48hr period.  A big thank you to SPE for having me! Printed Project: Joaquim Paiva Portfolio

“The negative is the score, and the print the performance.” - Ansel Adams I recently completed printing an edition of 24 images, 50cm x50cm, prints for longtime photographer and artist Joaquim Paiva.  I'm honored to have taken the project from scan, to retouch, to color correct, to print. He is very pleased with the digital representation and output of this great work.  To see more of his work, visit his site at: http://www.joaquimpaiva.com

Class Completed: Digital Negative to Silver Gelatin

Just finished teaching a group of enthusiastic students how to take their digital images and print them as traditional darkroom silver gelatin prints.  It was a lot of fun! It will be offered again at Rayko Photo Center, San Francisco.  Look out for it!  On a related note, I am now working on a compensation curve that will allow crazy people like me to print Mural Size silver gelatin prints from low res digital capture or really dense negs. Currently trouble shooting it with Luis Mendoza (his image below). Oh possibilities.
